Introduction

Welcome to the Tangerine blog. I am looking forward to reading your thinking about our book and discussing the book in a new and exciting way! Remember that when you are using the blog, you are always responsible for completing the assignment, however if you like you may always add additional thoughts and comments about our book.

For your first assignment, please answer the questions below by Wednesday. Remember to number each response and use evidence from the book to support your thinking. Also, remember to put your name at the end of your entry as though you are signing a letter. Happy blogging!

1.) In part two of the book, Paul attends Lake Windsor Middle school. How are the two schools and soccer teams different?

2.) Why do you think that Joey Costello acted the way he did at Tangerine middle school? Why do you think Paul could deal with going there, but Joey couldn't?

3.) It appears from the beginning of the book that although Paul has poor eyesight, he is the only one in his family that can really "see" the bad side of Eric. Why do you think this is?

4.) Write your thinking about the book so far. For example, how are you feeling about the characters, what are you noticing about the book that is different from others you have read etc.

1.) One reason the schools are different is that at Lake Windsor people were shoving Paul, and doing other things to bug him, when back at Lake Windsor nobody really did anything like that, and everyone just minded their own business.
The school soccer teams are different because Paul's old team was just an average team, but now he is playing for a team that is second in the country. Another thing that is different about the two soccer teams is the players. At Lake Windsor everyone, except for maybe Gino, was pretty laid back, and they just played the game. Now at Tangerine, guys like Victor and Tino were getting in Paul's face a lot, although they have eased up quite a bit on him now.

  2. 1.}I think that Tangerine Middle school is different because they seem more tough and they are really focused on always winning. I think that Victor is the person who always wants to win. He's always telling Paul what to do so their team can win. Also I think that Gino and all the people on the team are always going along with what Victor says.

2.) I think Joey acted the way he did at Tangerine because he wasn't used to being made fun of, but Paul was used to being made fun of because people at his old school before he moved to Florida, probably made fun of him all the time. I also think Joey is going through a very emotional time right now with his brother dying, and everything. Also because of Eric and Arthur making fun of him about trying to takes Mike's shoes off.

3.) I think the reason that only Paul can see bad side in Erik is because, 1.Their dad is always too worried about the Eric Fischer football dream. And 2.)Their mom is always too worried about Paul to be thinking about Eric.

4.) Some characters I like so far in the book are Paul, Joey, and I did like Mike Costello before he died. I do NOT like Eric, Mr. Fischer, or Arthur. I'm really not sure what I think about Victor and Tino, since they have been mean to Paul and Joey, but have always been really nice. I think that Paul's family really has been keeping the fact about how Paul lost his eyesight a secret. I think it is wierd that they talked so much about that big secret in the beginning, but now they havn't gone back to that part for a long time. I think that might be a sign that the author is going to tell us something big about that in a forecoming part in the story. I am also wondering why they would keep it secret from him? I mean, what could be so bad that his family would have to lie to him about a huge handicapped problem that he has had his whole entire life? I wonder what really happened to Paul, or if for some reason, he was being over suspicious, and the stories that they tell him about the eclipse are real.

The thought just came across my mind that Joey and Paul are actually fighting because of Victor. Well, they are not exactly fighting, but they are really not as open as they were before. What I mean is that they are still hanging out, but they are not really as talkative, and they really are not in good moods when it comes to their friendship. I also wonder if Joey will quit the soccer team after the incident with Victor and earning the permanent title, "Charlie the Tuna" I also wonder if Joey will get any playing time, if he stays on the team, of course.

I am wondering if the author is going to tell us more about Lake Windsor Middle School sometime soon. I am thinking this because once Paul and Joey go back again after it gets repaired, this fight will be over, won't it? I don't think the author would write about this whole fight if Paul and Joey would just go back to Lake Windsor Middle School and the fight would be over. I think that for some reason, they are going to stay there. I think the reason that Paul would want to stay at Tangerine Middle, is because if he goes back to Lake Windsor, he won't be able to play soccer anymore because of his IEP. I think Joey will want to stay because he might make some friends, and not want to leave them. I still cannot think of any possible scenarios to how Paul lost his eyesight if it wasn't because of an eclipse.Unless he maybe he got hit in the face really hard at a young age, and didn't remember it. And then when he got old enough to understand, and his parents were going to tell him the truth, he began to excell in soccer. Then maybe they thought he would stop playing soccer if he found out that soccer was the cause of his eyesight. It sounds pretty far-fetched, but it is the only logical scenario I could come up with, unless of course, it just happened, and they wanted him to have a story in case someone was making fun of him, but that doesn't sound very logical to me. Another thing I am wondering about is Eric. I wonder if he is going to become the laughing stock of the town, or if he will still be the famous Eric, with the main role in, "The Eric Fischer Football Dream" My guess is he will be laughed at for a while, but soon people will forget about it, and he will go back to being a star.

Jay, you keep saying that you have a feeling that the parents aren't telling Paul the truth about how he lost his eye sight. You have an uneasy feeling about this, because of some things that the author did. He is giving you small clues, especially in the beginning, that something isn't right about the eclipse story. Can you find any of these clues specifically?

Also, you wondering if Eric will become the laughing stock of the town. What happened that would make people laugh at him? You mentioned that you like or do not like certain characters. What reasons/evidence do you have for liking or not liking them? Keep up the good thinking and detective work!

  9. 2.]I think that Joey acted the way he did because he wasn't really made fun of at Lake Windsor Middle School and so he dosen't really know how to deal with it. I don't think Joey believes Paul when he said they were only teasing. Also, Victor was always telling Joey how he sould play soccer so they could win.

  10. I think that Paul's mom and dad can only see the good side of Eric because their very foucused on helping with his football dream that they only see how good he is at football. In their opinon he's the best player on the team so to them it doesn't really matter how he acts at school with his friends.

In my opinion I think that Victor is way to bossy. He's always foucused on making sure if his team wins so he bosses all the other people around.

So far, I really like Paul and Joey. I'm not really sure about Mike Costello because they didn't really talk much about him. I do NOT like Eric, Author and Victor. I think that as the book goes on Paul's mom and dad will begin to find out what kind of person Eric really is.

  12. I think that when Lake Windsor Middle School is repared Joey will go back but Paul won't. I think Paul will stay so he can play soccer and Joey will go back because he doesn't really like it there. He and Paul might keep fighting and so they wouldn't care if they went to seprate schools.

I think that one clue that Paul's parents are not telling him the truth about his eyesight is that Paul never remembers anything about an eclipse. Another clue might be that Paul says himself that he thinks his parents are not telling the truth about his eyesight.I think that Eric might become the laughing stock of the town because if a lot of people watch the news then they would see what a fool Eric made of himself during the football game. One thing I can argue about what Danielle said is that she thought Joey would go back to Lake Windsor. I do not think Joey will go back to Lake Windsor because he will probably get sick and tired of switching schools. I know I would. I also disagree with saying that Victor is a bad person.I think that Victor is just a very competetive soccer player who likes to talk smack, to his teamates, and other teams.

Jay, you said that Victor is one of the reasons that Paul and Joey are fighting so, wouldn't that make him a bad person? I think that Joey might go back because if him and Paul keep fighting he might not even want to go to the same school. Also, he might leave because he is tired of getting teased by Victor.

I don't think that just because Victor accidentally started a fight between two people, means he is a bad person. I think that Victor was just teasing, like he does to all the new people. I also think that they will get over the fight, because they were such good friends before it. One reason I think that Joey isn't taking the teasing very well is because he is not used to the teasing because he does not usually get teased. But with Paul, he is handicapped, and used to being teased. So Victor is just another person in the world, with another rude thing to say to him. I also think that Joey will stay because of three things.1:Joey will get sick of switching schools and will want to stay in one place.2:He will get used to Victor teasing him, and will not mind it after a while. And 3:He and Paul will get over their fight. There. Those are three good reasons why Joey will most likely stay at Tangerine after Lake Windsor gets it's repairs.

Oh, one thing I forgot to say in my last blog. I also do not think that Paul's parents will start to realize what kind of person Eric really is. I think that because Eric is never really home, except for before football games.

Another thought I have about this book right now is I am wondering about Tangerine. I am wondering why Paul is not really seeing anybody that he knows since I thought most of them would move to Tangerine after the sinkhole.
